introducing Otto von Erotica to Darling House 6/25/12

Note from founder JM Darling:

I’ve seen Otto’s beautiful work about the net and had for some time intended to reach out to say hello as I often do to talk shop, pick his brain and invite him to show with us. Much to my delight he beat me to it, contacting me to ask to show with us. We’ll be staggering his images to have you enjoy them carefully. Enjoy these three for now and please do follow him on Twitter and Tumblr to show your appreciation:

I would love nothing more than to give you a lengthy introduction about myself, but there really isn’t much to say, because I don’t actually exist. I am simply an identity, a fictional persona. I was created to provide another channel, a different voice, to be a veil of sorts. If you really want to know the truth about me, it’s not a big secret and you are probably smart enough to figure it out. Google is your friend.

Who I am really isn’t relevant. I could tell you all the normal boring information that most photographers share, like where I grew up, how I discovered my passion for photography, my awards and publications, blah, blah, blah, but none of that has anything to do with the processes or motivations behind making my images. It would simply be an unnecessary attempt at validating my work. You can look at my images and decide if I am valid, can’t you?

Actually, the truth is that some of you are probably so inundated with sexualized images that you have become jaded. You will simply glance through these image without seeing anything of note. It will all just blend into the never-ending stream of image overload. I’m actually okay with that, because the rest of you will find something that strikes your imagination. And that is what I am after.

My images are not for people who cannot think or imagine. If you are looking for the money shot, that’s really not what I am about. I want to tell stories, but only parts of stories. The beauty of it is that you get to fill in the gaps, you get to use your imagination to think about what happened just before and just after the moment I clicked. It’s not a new concept, but it’s the one that makes the most sense to me. If I gave you all the answers, you wouldn’t ask any questions, and what fun is that?

Most of my work is shot on the road, in hotel rooms or a borrowed space. Many of my shoots are unplanned, opportunistic or serendipitous encounters. Some are with professional models, some are with random strangers. I am not picky. What I require of my models is honesty. I want them to be honest in front of my camera. I try to provide ideas, inspiration and my own imagination, but ultimately, it’s the model who has to make the image, I am there to guide, direct and capture.

So, please, enjoy these images. Take a moment to use your imagination when gazing at them. If you have questions, I’m happy to respond.
